Fluoride
Fluoride is a mineral that comes from a crystal.
- Research has shown that high doses of fluoride over long periods of time changes pathways in your brain. This is called a neurotoxin. It causes Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Research has been done to see if fluoride systemically is causing IBS and other digestive issues. I did not pay for the rights to read the paper to see what the results were. However, if they are looking into the fact that Fluoride is causing digestive issues there is a concern.
- Fluoride has a warning label right on it if your child swallows to report to the poison control immediately.
- Research states that fluoride toothpaste should not be used on children under 12 years of age!!
- However, in the dental profession this is not what we tell parents!

Pretty as a crystal; toxic in the mouth!!
A new research article that I am reading today proves that the chronic use of fluoride affects the liver, kidneys, and heart tissues. It is highest in the kidneys then followed by the liver, and heart. There was found degeneration and necrosis of the renal tissues and myocardium which is the kidneys and heart. Chronic fluoride correlates to fluoride induced hepatic & cardio renal toxicity. The results draw attention that chronic fluoride intake poses a significant health risk to humans, and animals.
There is concerns about fluoride causing damage to the thyroid and pituitary gland. I couldn’t not find any solid research to confirm. However, I am not an expert researcher. I think we get the message that Fluoride which is back by the ADA is causing harm in our body. Research does confirm that fluoride prevents cavities, however, there is other minerals that are better than fluoride. The ADA only puts the seal of approval on toothpaste, and toothpaste with fluoride.
Glycerin
It is made from GMO vegetable oils, which is toxic to your body. It is used as a soap for your teeth.
Sodium Lauryl sulfate
It causes mucosal irritation, or inflammation of the tissues of the tongue, gingiva. It can cause ulcerations and toxic reactions within the oral cavity. It causes micro cuts within the soft tissues of your mouth. It can cause teeth to be more sensitive and can reduce the fluorides effectiveness at mineralizing the teeth. SLS is what makes the toothpaste nice and foamy in your mouth.
Cellulose gum
In a study done in 2021 it found that longer term use of cellulose gum alters the microbiome in your gut. Meaning it alters, changes, decreases the good bacteria in your gut needed for healthy digestion. Prolonged consumption of cellulose gum can cause chronic inflammatory conditions, which is the cause of almost every disease including, colitis, metabolic syndrome, and Colon cancer!!
Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate
This ingredient helps remove or inhibit calcium and magnesium in your saliva. By inhibiting these minerals that are in your saliva it will reduce the calculus or tartar build up on your teeth. This ingredient is often in tartar control toothpaste. Make sure this ingredient is not in your children’s toothpaste!!
This sounds great right? Your teeth are exposed to changes of ph in your mouth multiple times a day. This causes acid to weaken the enamel of your teeth several times a day. The minerals calcium and magnesium help re-mineralize your enamel naturally. When it is stopped or hindered then your teeth cannot re-mineralize themselves naturally.

It is well established that pyrophosphates inhibit crystal growth of hydroxyapatite in bones and teeth and theoretically may negatively affect the demineralization-remineralization equilibrium at the tooth surface.
Sodium Saccharin

In a genotoxicity study Saccharin caused more DNA damage than aspartame.
SS raises intolerance to glucose. Sodium Saccharin disrupts the balance of the microbiome. It puts one at a higher risk for metabolic disorders like obesity, diabetes, and cancer. It has been shown to cause rashes and hives with some people which is the lesser of the toxicity issues.
Titanium Dioxide

White coloring of the toothpaste
After reviewing research, it we concluded that the existing body of evidence raises concern for human health regarding the long-term ingestion of E171.
The wide-spread human exposure in combination with the reported tumor-promoting and pro-inflammatory responses in animal experiments. Research shows that chronic exposure to this ingredient E171 accumulates through the bloodstream mostly in the liver, kidneys, placenta, and brain. Colon cancer is of concern with E171 and more research does need to be done.
Blue 1- Brillant Blue

Synthetic dye that creates a brillant blue color found in many foods and drinks. We have been hearing a lot about the food dyes in the food targeted for children. However, we don’t hear much about the same color in our toothpaste! Blue 1 is in a raw form from coal tar or petroleum that goes through a chemical process to create that pretty blue!! The FDA has deemed it safe for us and there is no health concerns. Other countries think otherwise. I do not think we were ever meant to have coal tar or petroleum in our mouth!!
Cytotoxicity of the Ingredients of Commonly Used Toothpastes and Mouthwashes on Human Gingival Fibroblasts
Conclusion:To decrease the cytotoxic effects of toothpastes, sodium lauryl sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine should be replaced with safer detergents, and the concentration of fluoride should be decreased to 400 parts per million (ppm). Alternatively, fluoride may be replaced with other antibacterial and cariostatic agents.
I have been a Dental Hygienist for 15 years. This research has been shocking to me. I blindly put my faith in the ADA seal of approval, my profession and their guidelines. I trusted huge companies making the toothpaste. But mostly, I gave recommendations believing in the products, that they were good for them.
There are other ingredients that are great alternatives to mineralize the enamel of the teeth. They have been researched and stated they work as well as fluoride without the toxicity to the rest of the body. I hope this has been very educational for you. It was for me as I did the research. I wrote 2 blogs about toothpaste, the other blog is mostly cutting and pasting the research and resources. It contains the link of where the articles came from so you can read it yourself.
I have also done research on the ingredients of the toothpowders I have created. I will be sharing that information soon. I love what I have created for the health of your teeth, gums and over all of your body. It can be used with children safely too.
Please share this information with your family and friends. Let’s get the truth out about toothpaste together. Please comment what you thought of this information and if it was helpful. If you have any questions let me know. I will do my best to answer it.
Much Love and Health
