I am a dental hygienist and have been for 15 years. The importance of oral health is greatly misunderstood in this country, and within the medical field. A few people brush their teeth twice a day. Most people brush actually once a day in the morning. I am 59 years old, brushing twice a day is a lot of brushing. I have been using commercial toothpaste all these years without much thought about what is in the toothpaste. Or what happens to all those tubes of empty toothpaste? If I have brushed my teeth two times a day in 59 years that is a total of 43,070!! I can’t imagine how many empty tubes I have thrown away.
I recently created toothpowders. What is a toothpowder you ask, good question. Toothpowder is a all natural organic powder. It uses ingredients that provide the best possible health to your teeth and gums. It is not a paste, meaning it is dry. You dip a wet toothbrush into a small amount of powder and brush your teeth.

I wanted to research the history of toothpowder, and toothpaste. Toothpowder is at least 5000 years old. The Egyptians are the first ones to have used toothpowder to clean their teeth. They used burnt eggshells, burnt hooves or bones of animals, and herbs like myrrh to make the breath smelling fresh. Pumice was also ground into a fine powder and used. The Romans used crushed eggshells, and charcoal. China and India used herbs, and salts into their powders as a more holistic approach to oral care.
What I find interesting is that they used crushed eggshells or oyster shells. Both of which have a very high content of calcium. One of the ingredients I use in the toothpowder I make is actually a calcium carbonate from eggshells. It re-mineralizes the enamel by its a high content of pure calcium. Something they knew 5000 years ago.
The ancient Greeks and Romas used crushed bone, bark, and charcoal in the first toothpowders. Crushed bone is now called hydroxyapatite which is used to mineralize the enamel of teeth without using toxic fluoride. Again, they knew using crushed bone would help their teeth be healthy.

Toothpaste was born in the 1800s. Soap was added to the toothpowder improving how it cleaned. Toothpaste did not take off; it took decades before it hit the mainstream market. At first toothpaste was in jars or boxes, like a tin. The first mass produced toothpaste was by Colgate in 1873. It wasn’t until 1890s that a dentist named Dr. Washington Sheffield invented the first collapsible tube. He got the idea from paint tubes.
In 1914 fluoride was introduced into toothpaste in order to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. As the century continued the toothpaste became less abrasive. The toothpaste purpose was now marketed to help protect the teeth from being polished too hard and coarsely. And fluoride to prevent cavities.

The Modern Toothpowder
The modern toothpowder is ALL NATURAL, NO FLUORIDE. It provides more wholesome and environmentally conscious option. It is meant for you to elevate your oral health and become consciously aware of what you use to care for your oral health. It is meant to reduce the exposure to potentially harmful chemicals that are in the toothpaste you purchase at the store.
The toothpowders I have created use the HIGHEST QUALITY ingredients. I go to great lengths to ensure premium quality products to maximize your time in caring for your teeth and gums. Each ingredient is selected for purpose to optimize your health. I have meticulously studied and chose ingredients to not only protect but to be mineral rich for the remineralization of the enamel of your teeth. These minerals will reduce sensitivity, prevent decay and help make the teeth stronger within the bone.
The toothpowder comes in a glass brown jar with a lid to ensure freshness. The jar is reusable, and in fact if you order more toothpowder and reuse the jar I will send your powder in a small ziploc bag. You will pay less money, and we will reduce the impact on our plant. Reducing waste of empty toothpaste tube in our landfills should be a concern for all of us.
My toothpowder will whiten your teeth within days. You will notice a difference in how clean your teeth feel immediately after brushing. You might begin to notice that your teeth feel cleaner longer, because the ingredients help prevent the accumulation of plaque on your teeth. You might even notice that your gums feel tighter and look pinker. One person who used my toothpowder for 10 days went to her regular dental visit and reported she had the best dental checkup ever!!
